BAROLO One of the most highly regarded red wines in the world PRODUCTION SITES: Produced in the areas of Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba in Piedmont
COLOUR: Barolo is dark, full-bodied and high in alcohol and tannin. The red intense colour can take on an unusual orange tinge during the aging. AROMA: Barolo typically smells of flowers; the new wines smell of roses and violets. The superior version has a slight smell of candied cherries and cooked plums. The initial nose of this wine is usually that of pine trees. TASTE: Barolo is elegant, well balances and tastes of fresh cherry with round flavours and smooth tannins. You can easily detect the aromas of liquorice, vanilla, tobacco and coffee. PAIRINGS: Excellent to pair with braised or roasted red meat and with well seasoned hard cheese. It is often used to cook extraordinary risottos. GRADATION: almost 13° SERVING TEMPERATURE: The ideal serving temperature is usually 18°C GLASS: We recommend using a broad glass to allow the wine to oxygenate.
AGEING: It can easily improve over decades of aging. It needs at least 3 whole years aging in large wooden casks. After at least 5 years aging (2 of which in durmast or chestnut barrels) it becomes Barolo Riserva.
EVENTS: At the end of September in the Piedmontese vineyards goes off the “Barolo Day”, a festival completely dedicated to this wine, its history and the traditions that have come after this incredible nectar. |
